Signs of inhalant use
- Finding unusual amounts of glues, lighter refills or aerosol containers in user's possession.
- Chemical smells from breath or clothing.
- Paint or other chemical stains on face, hands or clothing.
- Unexpected and rapid ‘drunken behaviour”.
Emergency first aid
If drowsy or unconscious:
- Lay the person on their side so that they won’t choke if they vomit.
- Remove the inhalant and make sure they are breathing fresh air.
- If they are unconscious call an ambulance (dial triple zero 000).
- Check their breathing and pulse regularly and commence CPR if necessary.
- Do not leave the person until medical assistance arrives.
If conscious:
- Remove the inhalant and make sure they are breathing fresh air.
- Try to stay calm.
- Keep them calm and relaxed (do not give chase or get them stressed) and try not to talk to them until they have sobered up.
- Be mindful that intoxicated users may act very erratically and sometimes violently.
The Victorian Department of Human Services has produced inhalant information sheets listing emergency procedures as part of the Management response to inhalant use: guidelines for the community care and drug and alcohol sector.

These information sheets also carry the following warning:
“Loud snoring or gurgling noises often mean that a person is not just ‘sleeping off’ the effects of inhalant use but is in a coma. Never leave a person like this, try and wake them but if you can’t, call an ambulance immediately.”
