The National Inhalants information Service (NIIS) aims to increase access to and availability of a wide range of information and resources on inhalant abuse across Australia.
The provision of information and resources, including regular updates, is available to the whole of the Australian community and in particular to the specific primary users or target groups of the service and those most likely to be called upon to help an inhalant abuser.
These groups are:
- Alcohol and other drug workers – this includes youth workers and mental health workers.
- Parents and teachers – the majority of inhalants abusers are young people. There is a need for parents and teachers to be aware of the dangers of inhalants abuse and the need to communicate with young people about those dangers..
- Police and ambulance personnel - this includes other frontline health workers also. These personnel are often the first on the scene of inhalant abuse episodes and need information about the effects and treatment of inhalants abuse..
- Indigenous communities – there are special issues particular to Indigenous communities in both rural and remote areas and in the city.
- Community Groups - members of communities affected by inhalant abuse.
- Retailers - need to be aware of legislation in several States and Territories control the supply of inhalant products.
- Media - need to be aware of the sensitivities when reporting inhalant abuse.
- Youth - users or friends of users.
All of these groups as well as the larger community have an interest in preventing inhalants abuse which has a devastating effect not only on the individual but also the wider community. Specific inhalants information has been grouped together to help these target groups.
If you need help to find specific inhalants information or you are aware of additional information we can include on this site, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at info@inhalantsinfo.org.au.
